Ostara is the Spring Equinox. As with Mabon, it
is a time of balance, a point at which the day and the night are of equal
length.
This is a festival sacred
to the Anglo-Saxon Dawn Goddess, with the symbols of the egg and the hare.
Spring is most definitely in the air - the birds are becoming territorial,
and perhaps are visible in distinct pairs. Trees are in bud, with the
first signs of the cycle of life. The snowdrops may be gone, but the
daffodils and tulips are starting to come through. In my own garden, my
'Canary Bird' climbing rose, one of the earliest flowering roses, has not
just buds, but leaves as well.
And a word of explanation
for the caption on my picture for this Sabbat: visible on this branch are
the male catkins and the female flower buds, both of which are necessary
for the hazel to bear fruit.
At Imbolc, we sowed the
seeds for our year. Let us not forget that it takes several aspects for
those seeds to bear a harvest.
